Talk #1 - Curating Games in a Contemporary Art Context

‍With Lynn Hughes, Ida Toft, Marie Foulston, Danielle Braithwaite-Shirley, Angelo Careri

Why are games now appealing in contemporary art? What are the challenges in curating games in a contemporary art context? Is a contemporary art context the most meaningful one for experimental/art games?

‍

Talk 2# - Tensions and Affinities between Artistic Creation and the Video Game Industry

‍With Pippin Bar, Temitope Olujobi, Mélanie Courtinat, daffodil jenx, Raphaëll Maïwen, Maize Longboat

A new generation emerging from art schools now uses games and video games not only as a natural means of expression, but as a way to articulate their relationship to the past, contemporary culture, and society. However, there is a parallel history rooted in communities of experimental game creation that have worked radically with the form since the 1980s. These creators have been shaping the medium’s form, aesthetics, and possibilities, expanding and stretching games as a medium. Where are tensions and affinities between these two communities of practice ?
