BIO - DAVE GAGNON

Dave Gagnon explores through various media (installations, architectural projections, public interventions and performances) the interplay between the voluntary and the involuntary, questions the boundaries that define art and reflect on what drives us to see beyond the eyes.

His approach is characterized by the predominant place of the human being within the work itself. He creates spaces in close relationship with the spectator where the perception of his own identity often exists on distinct but consecutive planes, giving rise to works where visual, sonic and interactive correspondence plays are put forward.

Its production highlights the relationship with others and follows reflections focused on issues of interactivity, virtuality and identity.

His work as an independent artist has been presented in the context of Manif d'art and Mois Multi of Québec, at the PHOS festival in Matane, at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, as well as at the Akousma festival and the Mutek festival in Montréal.

Dave Gagnon lives and works in Montreal and is a member of the audiovisual performance trio Falaises.

Sous la surface is an interactive installation integrating notions of web art, programming and electronics.

We have recently witnessed the almost systematic spilling of the sum of knowledge and human experience online.Through various digital platforms, the human experience now progresses almost inseparably on two levels: physical and digital, or virtual.

This project explores the relationship between the incessant digital signal and the physical presence of the users at its origin.

Here, the viewer is witnessing a physical manifestation of the virtual online activity: each "click" corresponds to an active online user. In this case, on the online encyclopedia Wikipedia.

Conversely, the physical presence in the installation as an observer directly influences the network in real time: to each viewer is assigned a web identifier that leaves a trace on the Internet and generates a «click» corresponding to his visit.

All of the activity translated into the installation during the exhibition, both online and on site, is constantly compiled on the site souslasurface.net, like a digital mirror.

A poetry is thus established between the fact of observing an uninterrupted flow of virtual activity and the fact that one' s presence as a physical observer echoes in this transposed virtual world.

We intend that the surface of the monitor represents as much the boundary as the bridge between two corresponding layers.
