EVM
ELEKTRA Virtual Museum

EVM is ELEKTRA’s new flagship project, a unique 3D experience which goes far beyond the traditional definition of a museum.

EVM reimagines the museum for the 21st century as a large-scale collective VR experience. Turning the VR into a location-based technology, the EVM offers a new platform for digital art. From artworks commissioned specifically for this unique space to works that exist in the physical dimension and have been digitized, ELEKTRA’s Virtual Museum features collaborations with artists who explore how these cutting-edge technologies can create new forms of artistic expression.

CURRENT EXHIBITION

Designed as a museum in its own right, EVM is intended to present multiple exhibitions over time. This inaugural exhibition focuses on collaborations with artists from Quebec. It features works by long-standing ELEKTRA collaborators, including pieces adapted and digitized for this virtual environment, as well as projects by emerging artists for whom this platform represents a new space for exhibition and experimentation.

HISTORY

The first iteration of the ELEKTRA Virtual Museum was developed in 2020, when the 5th edition of the ELEKTRA Biennial, METAMORPHOSIS, was originally scheduled to open. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and the shutdown of cultural institutions made a physical presentation impossible. In response, ELEKTRA, in collaboration with co-curator DooEun Choi, Art Director of Hyundai Motorstudio Seoul, created an online browser-based exhibition, marking the beginning of its virtual museum initiative.

In June 2022, ELEKTRA launched a downloadable version of the EVM: a 3D immersive environment built in Unreal Engine, again developed in collaboration with Baillat Studio and Locomotive. This Desktop version had three pavilions and included the exhibition METAMORPHOSIS METAVERSE, curated by DooEun Choi, continuing the international collaboration initiated during the 5th and 6th Biennials.

The Desktop version is no longer available, however, the EVM continues to evolve. Its latest development, the VR version, is created in-house by ELEKTRA, and is currently ready for export. We work in close collaboration with artists to continually refine and improve the platform. Our goal is to ensure it fully supports the needs of our community and supports the works being created at this moment.
