Adam Basanta

Born in Tel Aviv (Israel, 1985) and raised in Vancouver, BC, Adam Basanta has lived and worked in Montreal since 2010. While he began his studies in contemporary music composition, he has developed a broad, experimental, autodidactic artistic practice in mixed-media installations, sculpture, and print media. Across various media and techniques, he investigates technology as a meeting point of concurrent, overlapping systems—a nexus of cultural, computational, biological, and economic forces. Since 2015, Basanta's works have been exhibited worldwide, receiving various honours in both Canada and abroad.

There are moments when, waking up, one is disoriented by their environment and cannot help but wonder about the structures in which we find ourselves individually enmeshed, as well as the internal structures that produce the feeling or perception of individuality. In accordance with a materialist worldview infused with information metrics and advanced statistical computation, one must seriously confront the question: can individual actions be adequately represented, explained, and predicted by large-scale information processing? Would a world where monitored individuals resonate within bespoke structures be preferable, in terms of the question of individuality? What is an individual, what is a corporate entity, if not a managerial organism? A collection of nodes, relations, roles, and structures in a dynamic dance. A form with a lion body and the head of a man, moving its slow thighs, an algorithmic gaze blank and pitiless as the sun. A second coming. Moving laterally across observations, ROUGH BEAST is a work of speculative auto-fiction on the future of artificial intelligence and labour, network science and data rights, personal doubts and collective memories, and the role of the artist in a corporate environment.
