
Stéphanie Roland is a Belgian-Micronesian visual artist and filmmaker.
She creates films and installations that explore the invisible structures of the Western world, vast timescales, and hyperobjects.
She draws inspiration from a wide range of fields, from ecology and politics to geology and the cosmos.
After graduating from La Cambre and studying in Hito Steyerl’s class at the UDK Berlin, she completed a program at Le Fresnoy - Studio National. Her work is regularly exhibited internationally, with projects included in exhibitions at major institutions such as the Louvre Museum, the Benaki Museum, Le Botanique, the Kampala International Art Biennale, and Wiels. She has participated in photography festivals including BredaPhoto, the Belfast Photo Festival, Manifesta, Encontros da Imagem, BIP Liège, MOPLA, and Unseen. In 2017, she was selected for the Antarctic Pavilion’s group exhibition at the 57th Venice Biennale.
Her films have been screened at international festivals such as Visions du Réel, FID Marseille, ZINEBI, FEST New Directors / New Films, and the Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, among others. Her second short film, Podesta Island, had its world premiere at FID Marseille, where it won the Alice Guy Prize. s, her latest film, won the TËNK Prize at the 2022 Visions du Réel festival.
