Slow Track

Slow Track is a computer-generated video that restricts the limitless visual possibilities offered by current computer animation technologies.
With the intention of questioning the structural and aesthetic nature of the virtual image, Slow Track renounces the excess, speed, surrealism, science fiction, and fantasy typically associated with computer-generated imagery. The work deploys a hyper-realistic, slow, gentle, and perhaps mundane image that is wary of the software that produces it. The impeccable and sterile virtual spaces commonly depicted in architectural visualizations are replaced here by dusty, dirty, and cluttered spaces. Although their rendering is close to photorealistic quality, the images on screen have no connection to the real world. They are entirely generated by a computer whose output boils down to thousands of silent “image files.” There is no wind blowing, and the places depicted are nowhere in particular.

Rather than a computer-generated image that seduces us with excess, this is an image that demands patience. On screen, the digital perspective slowly recedes, then advances, oscillating between two fixed positions while traversing new environments. Attention seems to linger on mundane objects: a striped can, a toilet stall, or leaves in the wind. The animation unfolds slowly. Things remain unexplained, and the focus is on static or slow-moving images. The work’s sound plays with audio conventions associated with video games, motion graphics, and advertisements, constantly reminding the viewer of the artificial nature of these images.
