BIO - ANNE-JAMES CHATON

Anne-James Chaton has developed a multipolar body of work, based on a close study of the textual materials, which make up the everyday life of contemporary society. This ‘poor’ literature, known as « ephemera », comprising a multitude of documents printed out by innumerable machines -bank slips, shopping receipts, promotional flyers, customer loyalty cards, business cards, bus, train and metro tickets, etc. – is the source of Anne-James’ quests into sound, poetry and visual art, which he develops through solo projects (Evements 09, Portraits, Some Songs, ...) and in collaboration with artists from diverse fields. This polyglot dimension to his work has led him to collaborate with foreign artists like the English guitarist Andy Moor (The Ex) - The Journalist (2008), Transfer (2013) - and the German electronic musician Carsten Nicolaï – aka Alva Noto - Unitxt (2008) and Univrs (2011). He creates the trio Décade (2012), performance with Andy Moor and Alva Noto, and HERETICS (2015), a trio with Andy Moor and Thurston Moor, guitarist of Sonic Youth. This continuous focus on ‘low intensity literature’ has accompanied Anne-James during his trips abroad for numerous performances on the literary, rock and electronic music “scenes” all over the world.

PERFORMANCE

With Some songs, Anne-James Chaton continues the work around "poor writing" initiated with Evénements 99 (Al Dante, 2001) and Evénements 09 (Raster-Noton, 2011). He listens to the flow of lyrics of songs broadcast in public spaces, cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, waiting rooms, that he samples and reintroduces in sound and image, through a visual writing based on the signs of Morse, precursor code for digital communication.
